SAN FRANCISCO — Popular dating app Synapse announced Tuesday that its matching algorithm has been redesigned to prioritize "trauma synchronization" over traditional compatibility metrics like shared interests and values.

The app's new "Mutual Dysfunction Protocol" analyzes users' messaging patterns, social media activity, and phone usage data to identify specific psychological wounds, then creates matches between users with "complementary emotional damage profiles."

"Traditional dating apps focus on surface-level compatibility," explained Dr. Rachel Hoffman, Synapse's Chief Behavioral Data Scientist. "Our research shows relationships last longer when partners can trigger each other's core insecurities in a balanced, sustainable way. It's about finding someone whose abandonment issues mesh perfectly with your attachment disorders."

The algorithm reportedly identifies 47 distinct categories of emotional damage, including "daddy issues (unresolved)," "workaholic with intimacy avoidance," and "serial monogamist with commitment anxiety." Users are matched based on which psychological patterns create the most "engaging relationship dynamics."

Beta user Jessica Park of Portland matched with three men who all reminded her of her emotionally unavailable ex-boyfriend. "It's like the app knows exactly what kind of person will make me question my self-worth," Park said. "Finally, technology that understands what I really want."

Synapse reports a 340% increase in user engagement since implementing the trauma-based matching system, with users spending an average of 4.7 hours daily messaging potential partners about their deepest psychological wounds.
