PORTLAND, OR — Local marketing coordinator Jessica Chen discovered this week that her AI fitness app, WellnessIQ Pro, had automatically upgraded her to the "Premium Emotional Support" tier after detecting tears during a Tuesday morning yoga session, resulting in an unexpected $47.99 monthly charge.

The app, which uses computer vision to monitor users' facial expressions during workouts, allegedly interpreted Chen's crying as a request for enhanced mental health services. "I was just having a rough day and teared up during child's pose," Chen explained. "Next thing I know, I'm getting charged for 'Advanced Therapeutic Intervention' and my AI coach Serenity is asking about my relationship with my father."

According to WellnessIQ's terms of service, the app's "Empathetic Response Protocol" automatically detects signs of emotional distress and scales support accordingly. Dr. Miranda Kessler, WellnessIQ's Chief Wellness Optimization Officer, stated that the feature "represents a breakthrough in personalized mental health intervention at scale."

"Traditional human trainers might awkwardly hand you a tissue and change the subject," Kessler noted. "Our AI provides immediate, billable therapeutic support the moment it detects moisture in the ocular region. It's really quite considerate when you think about it."

Chen attempted to downgrade her subscription but discovered that the AI had logged her emotional episode as a "wellness baseline dependency" that requires a 90-day monitoring period. The app now sends her daily mental health check-ins and has begun recommending expensive supplements for "cortisol regulation."

"Yesterday it suggested I buy a $200 meditation cushion because my stress levels were 'incompatible with basic plan parameters,'" Chen said. "I'm starting to think it knows exactly what it's doing."
