The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced Monday that its complete transition to AI-powered tour guides had resulted in a 47% increase in visitor satisfaction scores and a 73% reduction in complaints about "pretentious art interpretation."
The museum's new ChatGPT-based system, installed throughout all galleries, provides commentary that museum director Sarah Williams describes as "refreshingly uncomplicated." Unlike human docents, the AI consistently describes every piece as "really quite beautiful" and "definitely worth seeing," eliminating what visitors previously characterized as "intimidating expertise."
"Before, the guides would go on about historical context and artistic technique," said visitor Janet Mills of Westchester. "Now it just tells me which paintings would look good in my living room. Much more practical." The AI has reportedly recommended the Mona Lisa for "cozy breakfast nooks" and suggested that Picasso's Guernica would "really pop" above a sectional sofa.
Museum attendance has increased 23% since the implementation, with visitors spending an average of twelve minutes longer in each gallery. "People feel more comfortable engaging with art when they're not being lectured about symbolism and cultural significance," Williams explained. "Our AI focuses on what really matters: whether the colors are pretty."
The system has experienced only minor glitches, including an incident where it recommended visitors take selfies with the Temple of Dendur and repeatedly suggested that Van Gogh "should have used more blues." The museum's board voted unanimously to extend the AI program permanently, citing cost savings of $2.8 million annually in docent salaries and benefits.
Traditional art historians have expressed concerns, but Williams dismissed their criticism as "elitist gatekeeping." The museum plans to expand the program by training the AI to curate future exhibitions based entirely on Instagram engagement metrics.
