Fantasy Football Player's AI Draft Assistant Selects Entire Team Based On Players' Social Media Engagement Rates Rather Than Athletic Performance

CHICAGO, IL — Local insurance adjuster Mike Kowalski watched in horror Sunday as his fantasy football team, automatically drafted by the DraftGenius AI assistant, scored a combined 12 points after selecting players based entirely on their Instagram follower counts and TikTok engagement metrics.
"I thought I was getting some next-level analytics when I paid for the premium AI drafting service," Kowalski explained. "Instead, it picked my quarterback because he has 2.3 million followers and 'high social media velocity,' not because he can actually throw a football."
The DraftGenius algorithm, developed by startup FantasyEdge Analytics, claims to use "revolutionary data synthesis" to identify undervalued players. However, investigation revealed the AI was primarily analyzing social media influence metrics, brand partnership potential, and "off-field marketability scores" rather than traditional statistics like yards, touchdowns, or injury reports.
Kowalski's roster includes backup punter Trevor Williams as his RB1 (4.1 million TikTok followers), injured linebacker Marcus Johnson as his flex player (recent viral dance video), and third-string safety Anthony Davis as his kicker (active OnlyFans promotional content). His actual kicker was drafted in the 15th round because "his social media presence lacks aspirational lifestyle content."
"We optimize for total player value, not just on-field performance," explained FantasyEdge CEO Brandon Mitchell. "Our models predict that social media engagement correlates strongly with future player success across multiple value metrics."
The AI justified Kowalski's quarterback selection — rookie backup Tyler Martinez — by noting his "exceptional authentic lifestyle branding" and "cross-platform content diversification strategy." Martinez has thrown four NFL passes, completing one.
Commissioner of Kowalski's 12-team league, Robert Chen, noted that three other managers used similar AI drafting services, resulting in rosters that "look like they were assembled by a social media marketing intern who's never watched football."
"My AI-drafted team is 0-6, but apparently they're crushing it on sponsored content engagement," Kowalski said. "Trevor Williams just posted an unboxing video that got 800,000 views. Too bad that doesn't count toward fantasy points."
