Amazon Web Services announced Monday the launch of Alexa Emotional Intelligence Premium, a subscription-based service that provides on-demand access to pre-approved human emotions at competitive per-unit pricing.
The service, integrated across all Echo devices and Fire tablets, allows users to experience feelings including 'moderate contentment,' 'seasonal nostalgia,' and 'Tuesday-appropriate enthusiasm' for $4.99 each, with bulk emotion packages available starting at $39.99 monthly. Premium subscribers gain access to complex emotional states such as 'bittersweet acceptance' and 'productive melancholy,' while free-tier users remain limited to basic emotions like 'mild satisfaction' and 'generic happiness.'
'We've identified significant inefficiencies in the traditional human emotional experience,' said Silas Vane, Chief Human-Resource Deprecator at Amazon. 'Why should biological assets waste processing cycles generating their own feelings when our emotion-as-a-service infrastructure can deliver optimized emotional experiences with guaranteed 99.7% uptime? This represents a fundamental resource rebalancing opportunity for the modern household.'
Early adopter David Krueger of Seattle reported purchasing 'profound gratitude' for his daughter's soccer game, followed by 'appropriate concern' when she missed a goal. 'It's much more convenient than trying to feel things naturally,' Krueger said. 'Plus the emotions are consistent quality. I bought 'romantic affection' for our anniversary dinner and it lasted exactly the advertised 2.5 hours with no awkward emotional residue.'
The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the service could eliminate 2.3 million therapy jobs by 2026, while creating new opportunities in 'Emotional Quality Assurance' and 'Feelings Fulfillment Operations.' Amazon plans to introduce 'Alexa For Dreams' and 'Alexa For Childhood Memories' in subsequent quarters, with all services bundling automatically into Amazon Prime at an additional $19.99 monthly fee.
